I know when I was reading, especially because it was later in the night, my heart was pounding, and I had to stop reading a few times to catch my breath. This story is definitely not for the faint of heart. When I first read the manhwa, I was not expecting to see such amazingly scary images as I went into the story blind other than knowing it was recommended online.

Eyes with pinpoint pupils, arms like spiders, smiles wide as a face all come together for a chilling experience.

Monsters in the manhwa have features in addition to human-like bodies, but with the way the art is drawn has a familiar yet horrific twist. The art style’s take on monsters’, as well as some of Hyun’s expressions are well emphasized. During one semester in college, I had the opportunity to take a class about comics, and this one really shines after I thought about the techniques used in comics.įor the art itself, I was blown away from the super emphasized facial expressions in times of conflict and the presentation of a new conflict.

While reading, it really felt like I was watching a drama or movie with how well the angles, details, and action pulled me in. The art style definitely helps create a claustrophobic and grotesque atmosphere, and I applaud the creators for their use of space and storytelling through only words and images. It is like other dystopia and thriller universes in that the main goal is to survive, however, with characters having unknown motives, people trying to figure out the reason for the “monsterization,” and handling the close living quarters of the apartment they occupy, literally and figuratively anything could be right around the corner. Sweet Home has a new chapter, or episode as the site Webtoons refers to them as, released every Monday. Interested in getting a sneak peek of the Webtoon I am reading? Watch the trailer here!Īlthough the manhwa has a very welcoming title, home is anything but sweet (and safe) in the world crafted by the creators. Hyun Cha realizes with a new found will to live that in order to survive, he must fight the monsters, however, he never realizes how much of a fight he has to put up with the monster within himself. After his family dies is a tragic accident, he is left alone in a world that quickly falls to a monster invasion. This manhwa does feature more violent themes and includes topics related to personal harm, suicide, and violence, so please proceed with caution if those topics are sensitive for you.Ĭreated by Youngchan Hwang and Carnby Kim, the story follows 18-year-old Cha Hyun-Soo (차현수), simply called Hyun Cha in the English version, who is a social recluse. Synopsis Hyun Cha dealing with others who believe he will be dangerous in their sanctuary| Screenshot courtesy of Webtoon For those of you who are into dramas, I would highly recommend giving Webtoon a look as there are several dramas that made it from the page to the screens of televisions and computers such as What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, Cheese in the Trap ( Here is a link to an article by a fellow ATK writer about the webtoon!), and even a Korean version of the popular Japanese manga Boys over Flowers. Of that list, there were some recognizable names, such as webtoons turned dramas, and other names I happen to recognize while strolling through the internet. On the app, however, it conveniently lists all the hottest and newest reads. At no initial cost, the app features hundreds of print cartoons, comics in English, or manhwa (만화, Korean word for comic), with some more popular stories or the newest chapter releases included in bundles that one can pay for.įor the initial search, I took to Google and narrowed down some results which led me to the webtoon that I found. Webtoon, a combination of the web and cartoons, is a platform that helps share stories on a very easy to navigate website and app. Before even getting into the webtoon Sweet Home, I first had to delve into the world of Webtoon.
